Smokers happen to be people too. For those of you who do smoke, you probably feel a little like a criminal at times.
It seems that everywhere you go smoking is being banned. Now you know that smoking is bad for you, in fact, you would have to have lived under a rock for the last 25 years not to know it.
It just seems to you that the disapproving looks and hand waving when you are trying to enjoy a smoke is a little much. In fact, the stress of trying to find a "safe" place to smoke only increases your desire to light up.
Fact, smokers are well aware of the health risks. Fact, smokers hate it when others try to force them to feel bad about their habit. While they may not say it they are probably thinking that the person lecturing them to quit could stand to lose a few pounds.
Let's get serious though, for those of you who recognize that you are ready to quit how do you do it successfully?
Acknowledge that you want to quit for your self. It might be that you want to quit for your self because you want to be a good role model for your kids or you want to be healthy later in life or it just cost too much.
Settle into this thought. This just means that, for now, keep your thoughts of quitting to your self. You are fragile at this stage and need to gather your strength to tell others if you choose.
Decide how you will quit. Cold turkey is fine but there are many options available.
Get support. This is done before you tell anyone. It might be your sibling or your spouse or even an online support group. You need a positive person who will celebrate each day you do not smoke with you. This person will also need to agree to be understanding with you if you are anxious or cranky.
Set a date that you will be non smoker. This is different than setting a day to quit. By setting a date when you will officially be a non smoker, you are saying to your self that you can do this and putting a period to it!
Embrace your new life. Instead of avoiding all "triggers", embrace how good it feels to not smoke, to be free of a bad habit and to be healthy.
Your approach to quitting smoking must be a positive one. Becoming a healthier person is to see your self in a more positive way.
You are not "giving up" something, you are regaining your health and you are doing it just for you. You may even become that "support" for another smoker who desperately wants to quit someday!
