Renault Grand Scenic - An Overview

Europe is one continent where competition never dies among car makers

. With the release of every new model, the other companies start thinking of new designs to better the previous model. Renault has successfully withstood the test of time and has emerged victorious almost every time. It has won over all other car designs in the compact car industry and with models like the Renault Megane, Coupe, and the Renault 19 series, it has cemented its place in this market. The Renault Grand Scenic is not an exception to this statement and has proved to be wildly successful in Europe.

The first car to be classified as a compact multi-purpose vehicle, the Renault Scenic was first launched in 1996. Many critics have observed that Renault's concept of a compact MPV has been inspired by French cinema great Jaques Tati's 1971 film 'Traffic'. The chassis design is based on that of the Megane series, with the overall length of the Scenic being made slightly higher. The highlight of this design was the large boot space that this car offered. The first edition of the Scenic could seat up to five people and had five doors.

This Scenic used a 1.8 litre petrol engine and a 1.9 litre diesel option was also offered, in addition to smaller engines. A new model, the Scenic II was released in 2003, with a lot of extra storage space.

Renault also experimented with a four wheel drive vehicle and launched it under the name Scenic RX4. The suspension had to be redesigned, and provided for higher ground clearance. The third generation Scenic was released in 2009, along with a new model called the Grand Scenic, which could seat up to seven people.

The Grand Scenic has a two litre diesel engine with an option of a water-cooled 1.4 litre petrol engine. The dashboard has been given a facelift and the display unit shows the driver all kinds of information taken from the different electronic systems operating in the vehicle.

The top speed achievable in a Grand Scenic is around 120 kilometres per hour, with a power output of 130 brake horsepower. An optional satellite navigation system is also available in this car. This car is replete with audio systems capable of playing from an external storage device or an iPod. The Thin Film Transistor display adds a bit of colour and the controls are quite easy to handle. There is a glass sunroof as well, which makes this car ideal for long family road trips.

Parking sensors and climate control systems have also been provided. The transmission consists of a six speed manual gearbox, and an automatic transmission system can be bought separately and integrated. The Grand Scenic also has Electronic Stability Control (ESC), antilock braking system, and a speed limitation system that warns when a driver attempts to drive too fast. Other standard accessories like airbags, seatbelts and storage trays have also been provided. The Renault Scenic won the European Car of the Year award in 1996, and one can expect the Grand Scenic to follow suit soon.
