Renew Home Decor With Floor Refinishing

It is quite common to only notice your flooring when it is first installed and then

never really think of it until it starts to look worn, ashen, cracked, and stained. There are several natural elements, accidents and occurrences that can cause damage to your home or office flooring. Spilled drinks and shoe or nail polish are common floor staining culprits. The flux of foot traffic throughout a space -- particularly through high traffic areas -- can cause a lot of wear and tear to the flooring near the doorways and around the placement of furnishings. It can grow extremely unattractive as time goes on.

You can cover it with area rugs and runners, but is it really cost effective or appealing to have several rugs in one room? This issue is not only limited to hardwood. Tiles and linoleum have their timelines as well. It is, however, far more common to use the term "floor refinishing" in reference to natural hardwood.

Tiles and linoleum simply need to be replaced, but wood flooring requires a little more tender love and care. The natural fibers are hard to destroy. Even if there are old ink stains and even a little fire damage, it can be scraped away. The planks can be resurfaced for a restored shine that will let the wood grain come right through once again. Frankly, whether you've been living in your home for five days or fifty years, your flooring is and should be a focal point of not only your home, but also your interior design and floor refinishing can help bring it back to its glory days.

The floor refinishing process depends on the type of hardwood flooring you have and the type of coating and/or damage that has already occurred. Speaking of damage, the first step is to have the flooring thoroughly inspected between now and the actual restoration. This will include raised nails, deep scratches, and/or loose boards. Second, you will want to block off all other areas of the house from the dust exposure of the sanding process. This is called masking. Third, your professional flooring restoration specialists will gradually sand the floor using disks that will gradually take more and more of the old finish off, while vacuuming in between uses. Fourth, they will block excessive sunlight from entering the space before applying a coat of sealant, followed up by your finishing stain. They will complete the project by buffing and cleaning for a smooth finish.
