Repair Or Replace Asphalt Shingle Roofs
In many cases homeowners have trouble determining whether they need to repair or replace their asphalt shingle roofs
. Because they are not commonly well versed in shingles and roofing this can make the decision difficult. There are however a few ways to determine whether a shingle can be repaired, or if they should just go ahead and install an entire new roof!
Structure & Stability
If the shingles on the roof are not providing structural adequacy as well as keeping water out they are not worth keeping. Other issues that would warrant the need for a new asphalt shingle roofs would be rotting, sagging, brittle or cracked shingles. The installation process would need to begin along with all new roofing materials to protect the homes structure. If there are minor problems such as rolled edges or one or two shingles that are problematic, they can probably be replaced. For shingles that are rolled, most can be flattened through the use of cement. Individual shingles can be removed through prying them up, removing the nails and replacing that individual one.
Basics Of Replacing Or Repairing
The repair or replacement of asphalt shingle roofs should be done when temperatures are between 40 and 85 degrees outdoors. In colder weather than 40 degrees the asphalt shingles often become brittle and crack very easy and this can become quite costly. When cold they also become much harder to cut, making the job go slower and can be wasted time. Weather over 85 degrees means that the roof's surface could be up to 100 degrees, which can make the shingle softer, meaning that it, can easily become scuffed or disfigured. This weakens the shingle and can diminish the life of the roof.
