Replacing Double Hung Windows
You can replace double hung windows yourself, and not go to the cost of a professional
, if you know what you're doing.
Here's how:
1. The new double hung windows will hang inside the old jamb. Measure the window width, at the top, both and in the middle. You should also take the same three measurements for the length of the window too. Double hung windows can get bent out of shape, just like any others, so again measure diagonally. You should get the same measurement for each diagonal if the window is in shape. Make sure your window will fit by ordering replacements in the shortest length and width.
2. You will be able to get a kit for the replacement of double hung windows. Take out the stops, the pieces that hold the sashes. Take off one sash cord, being careful to tie it so you don't let the counterweight fall
3. Next, gently let the counterweights drop and take out the pulley fixtures from the jambs. Close these holes with spray or insulation so the cavity for the counterweight is blocked.
4. Screw jamb liners onto each side of the window; add another parting stop in wood on the header jamb. Lower the catches on the outer track and load up this outer sash. Do the same with the inner sash.
5. Take out the inside sashes, trim and stops. Check for damage to the sill and fix it if necessary.
6. Take out any excess wood filler and smooth it off.
7. If you can, install the new double hung sashes from inside, tilting it to fit in from the bottom. However, if the window has a flange, you will need to do this from the outside, tacking it in with roughing nails.
8. Hold the new frame square with shims inserted between the jamb and the frame, nailing them in. Seal the frame with caulking or sealer tape so it is weatherproof.
9. Replace siding, trim, caulking and edging. Inside, put the stops back in, trim the window shims and put the inner trim back on.
There you have it - you have just replaced your double hung windows.
