Measure for Replacement Windows in 3 Easy Steps

Step 1 - Measure the Width

When measuring the width of your window, be certain to measure the surface of the jambs and not the trim or parting strips of your old window. In other words, be certain you're measuring from the inside of one jamb to the inside of the opposite jamb. Because windows can warm or shift through the years, it's best to measure at three points--the top, middle, and bottom--and use the smallest dimension for your order. You're choosing the smallest measurement just to ensure that the replacement window will actually fit the measurement; any remaining gaps can be filled in during installation.

Step 2 - Measure the Height

To measure the height of your window, be sure to start from the high point of the sill to the top of the opening. Once again, make three measurements--left, middle, and right--and use the smallest dimension.

Step 3 - Submit Your Order

When reporting your measurements for replacement windows, it's helpful to use the proper lingo to ensure your order is correct. Always say the width before the height in a ""# X #"" or ""# by #"" format.
