Resources for Finding Your Ancestors
There seems to be a renewed interest in our ancestors these days. More and more people want to know where they came from and who their ancestors are. It is important to find your place in history and discover the stories of those who lived before you. But many times searching for your roots can seem to be an overwhelming task. So where do you turn for help?
There are many resources that you can turn to when you are interested in finding your family history. Depending on how far back you are trying to go, it may be difficult and take some time. But there is a sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing who you are and where you have been.
Family Records Does your family have a family bible or family journal? Many families used to record all the important events in the bible and it was then passed down from generation to generation. If you have access to a book like this, make digital copies of the pages by scanning or photographing them. Then make sure you make several copies and send them to other relatives that might be looking for information. If you are lucky enough to have a family genealogy book, it would be nice to make copies for other family members of this as well. These family records and stories are invaluable and should be safeguarded and held dear.
Local Records Most courthouses will have records of births, marriages, and deaths that have occurred in the county or city. They are usually archived in the courthouse but you can contact them and make an appointment to view them. They should have a copy machine that you can use, if not bring a high quality camera that you can take pictures of the documents. In addition, make sure you write down important names and dates.
Family History Library The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormons, have a state of the art family history library located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This library is one of the most complete genealogy facilities you will find and people come from all over the world to do research there. They have census records, birth and death records and so much more to help you search for your ancestors. If you can't get to Salt Lake City to do your research, they have smaller libraries located all over the world and you can locate one using their website. In addition, you can find a lot of information and do quite a bit of research on their Family Search website. In addition to public, government, and religious records, they also have a large collection of family history records that have been donated by private individuals and families.
It is possible to find out where you came from and discover stories about your ancestors that you never knew. It takes a little time and perseverance, but as technology improves so does our ability to discover the past.
