Resume verification has achieved unforeseen importance as the number of job seekers exceed the number of jobs by a large extent
. For every given job there are hundreds of applicants vying. This has given rise to unhealthy competition and hence a practice of giving incorrect information in the resume.
It is indeed troublesome to realize that the person you have employed actually does not hold the requisite caliber. It is a great disappointment and you may have to repeat the whole process again. But then, if you do not take care to verify resume, you may end up repeating the whole process again and again.
Though nobody has ever found out a foolproof resume verification process, some precautionary and common sense measures will prove beneficial in this regard.
1. Get details: Instead of the name of the university, ask for the year of passing out, percentage of marks and roll number. In case of professional degrees and diplomas from lesser known institutes, ask for the detail of the institute, viz. address, contact numbers, enrolment number, name of the head or dean, etc. Contact any or many of these to verify the facts.
2. Ask for references: Ask the candidate to mention as many references as she can, with their details, addresses and contact numbers. Do contact these people to find out the truth about the candidate. Do ask for behavioural traits.
3. Contact previous employers: If you are enrolling experienced candidates, your job becomes a bit easier. Ask the candidate to furnish information about previous employer. Then get in touch with the previous employer and enquire about working aspects of the candidate.
4. Devise a test: If you are looking for any specific skill or trait, then device questionnaire or a test. Put very specific questions in the format that can garner more information about the candidate and his skills. If needed, seek professional help to devise such test.
5. Verify original documents: Do ask the candidate to submit original documents for verification. Check the genuineness of these documents with the issuing authority.
6. Get identity proofs: Ask the candidate to furnish documents that support his identity. It may be his college identity card, driving license or any club membership card. Do cross check whether the address mentioned is correct, original and matches with the one given in the resume.
7. Interview techniques: Interview of the candidate is very crucial tool to get to know the candidate. It is not a mere formality. So, frame your questions in order to get to know the candidate to the best. Do cross question to verify data mentioned in the resume. In case of doubts, get deep into the facts until he/she makes all facts clear.
8. Learn from your own experience: If you have been ditched by any candidate earlier or found out later that some of the facts mentioned by your employee are wrong; do take remedial measures this time. From your experience learn to catch the weak points of the candidates.
9. Get experts on board: There are experts who can identify whether the facts mentioned in the resume are correct. There are psychology experts who can make out whether the candidate is lying. There are recruitment specialists who can pinpoint the right candidate. Get these kinds of experts on your board.
These methods of
resume verification are quite cumbersome in the beginning; but save a lot of troubles later.
