The 2010 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in New Delhi

, India between 3 October and 14 October 2010. With a population of over 15 million, Delhi is one of the largest cities in the world. This will be the largest multi-sport event conducted to date in Delhi and India generally, which has previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi.

Commonwealth Games preparation

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called a high-level meeting on Friday to review the preparations of Commonwealth Games. This is second such meeting, which Mr. Singh has called to check the preparations of the October event.

He has asked the concerned authorities to make every effort to finish the pending work as people would expect a flawless inauguration to the Commonwealth Games. He admitted that there have been administrative delays and lapses in getting ready for the games. But he said that instead of finding faults with each others, efforts should be made by everybody to work together so as to finish the preparations before deadline.

On Sunday, he visited the Commonwealth Venues in New Delhi to inspect the level of preparation done for the October event.

Readers must have noticed that the preparation for the event has been marred by the allegations of corruption at high level and delays in scheduled work. With less than a month away for the event to start, the sport facilities are still incomplete.

New roads, metro lines and flyovers are weeks behind schedule and there are no signs that they will be completed on time. There are serious allegations of mismanagement and corruption on various levels. Also there are various problems with construction like the poor quality of the raw materials, financial kickback for the tender and fake building safety certificates.

This has angered the mindset of Indian, who are used to corruption, that the event of national importance and prestige is being compromised by opportunistic people for personal gain.

Bally Chohan review India's Commonwealth Games preparation

Bally Chohan was in India last week and was amazed to see India's preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth games 2010. Bally Chohan found nearly every road he travelled is dug up. He saw cranes and other construction machinery all around. Entire city seems to be covered up by a hazy dust cloud. Bally found New Delhi, capital of India in the midst of an amazing construction work in the run up to a mega sporting event.

Government of India is hoping that Commonwealth Games will bring in global attention to India in the same way as brought to Beijing for holding last Olympic Games. But Bally Chohan fears that this dream may very well turn into a nightmare. Bally Chohan came to know that Government of India will be spending around $330 million to build up infrastructure for upcoming

Commonwealth Games.

Bally Chohan was told that all schools in Delhi and NCR will have holidays during the games. Even the colleges & Courts will be kept closed during games to avoid unnecessary traffic on the roads.

Government of Delhi is also planning to launch "Delhi Celebrates" campaign. With this campaign Delhi Government will teach people not to litter, spit and urinate in public spaces.
