Rhodes: A Journey Into History

The island of Rhodes has been inhabited and built upon for over 3

,500 years and which is evident in the diversity of its architecture. There is a certain kind of charm in a place like this that cannot be copied. The many lives that have been lived here leave their mark and the cumulative effects are incredibly complex and often surprisingly beautiful. You can witness this around the many fascinating archaeological sites that are ubiquitous around the island.

For example, the modern new town meets the ancient on the site of the Hellenistic town of Rodos. Nearby, the Acropolis of Rodos still stands and includes the Temples of Zeus and Athena and the partly restored Temple of Apollo. Just below all of these structures stands the Stadium which is still often used to stage classical tragedies. It is also a wonderful place to watch a sunset unlike anywhere else in the world.

When exploring the east coast, be sure to take in the Acropolis of Lindos, one of the three early city-states. Also, check out the medieval city of Rodos and the Castle of Monolithos. For a truly ancient site and one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island, venture onto Symi Square in front of the Eleftherias Gate and visit the Temple of Aphrodite.

For a combination of history and shopping, go to the end of Sokratous Street and you will find Ippokratous Square which is a favourite hangout for locals and tourists alike. In the centre of the square, there is a breathtaking medieval Castellania fountain. The Palace of the Castellan is located on this square as well as many taverna's and cafes for enjoyable refreshment and relaxation.

If you need even more relaxation than this after a long day of exploration, a visit to the Turkish Baths (also called the Municipal Baths) in Platia Arionos may be just what the doctor ordered. The Byzantine building where the baths can be found dates from the 17th-century. This happens to be one of the only places in all of Greece where you can have this particular type of bathing experience. There is a nominal fee for the baths and they are popular with the locals and tourists alike. There are separate entrances for men and women. The whole experience will not soon be forgotten and by the time you leave the island of Rhodes you will have many stories to share with those who will listen.
