Rice is the second most produced grain crop of the world. It is used worldwide as food but Asia and Africa are large consumers of that staple grain. Pakistan owing to vast fertile land produces a number of food crops in huge quantities. Rice in Pakistan is the third largest cultivated crop. Its export in addition to its local consumption is the major cause of its cultivation on large scale. Pakistans 10% of cultivated area grow rice and is at fourth place in the world in terms of quantity of rice it produces annually. In all four provinces of Pakistan rice is grown from late April to late July.
Pakistan produces 6 million tonne rice of different kinds per annum which is enough to export after meeting the local needs. The country is the 3rd biggest exporter of the grain which brings foreign exchange to the country. Good range of rice varieties is available in Pakistan. A number of features determine the standard of rice namely its grains look, size and characteristics it has for cooking. The matter of price is also fixed on the basis of its standard and its storage age. Usually one year old rice is liked to eat.
A number of mills are set up for processing rice. After getting it from the farmers a sensitive procedure of separating the husk from the grain and then polishing the grain after grading it, all is done in rice mills. It is the function of the mills to change the paddy into rice ready to eat. That is why rice mills are often considered as rice manufacturers because of their extensive role for making them palatable. The rice break during processing sold at lower price and known as broken rice. Basmati rice produced in Pakistan with its unique aroma and delicious taste is considered the king of rice. The word Basmati comes from Sanskrit word BASH means smell. Basmati rice is exported worldwide from Pakistan because of its demand all over the world.
Rice is cooked in number of ways and eaten heartily by everyone from children to elders. Mainly plain, salty and sweet rice are the basic division of cooked rice. Rice crop requires more water after its young plants transferred to the field as compared to other crops. In fact paddy fields are water bounded at least for first couple of weeks and then regularly irrigated to get better average per acre. The areas of upper and central Punjab where average rainfall is the highest in the country are considered most suitable for the best rice crops. Fertile lands of Pakistan coupled with modern milling machinery give the people of world the best taste of rice. Research to get better quality and more average per acre is done in educational and other research institutes established especially for rice crop productivity.
