Rio de Janeiro is the capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil

. It is the second largest city in the country and is usually simply referred to as Rio. For about two centuries in the 1800s, Rio was the capital of Brazil.

There are a number of things that make Rio de Janeiro unique. It is one of the densest cities in two different ways: it has quite a high population of people and has two of the largest forests in the world. The population of the municipality is more than 6 million and over 10 million in the metro. The city therefore creates a rich blend of people, forests, seas and of course beaches.

The blue waters and white sand beaches offer one of the best places to take a vacation in the world. Another thing that Brazil is well known for is its rich musical diversity, where both the locals and visitors enjoy carnivals marked by music and dancing.

If you would like to learn more about the history of Brazil, you will find a number museums where you will get your fill. There are many tourist attractions, some of which are mentioned below.

The Statue of Christ Redeemer

This statue, which is 38 meters tall and covers 710 meters atop the Corcovado Mountain, was inaugurated in 1931. It was included among the Seven Wonders of the World. There are 220 steps leading to the statue, which you have to climb in order to reach it. However, there are now elevators that you can use to reach the statue more easily.

Ipanema Beach

This is the most popular tourist destination during summer, being one of the best beaches in the world. There are a number of activities that you can do here, from sun bathing to playing volleyball. If you want to get into the waters then you must be experienced as they tend to be rather rough.

Pao De Acucar

The Pao De Acucar is a special mountain view point where you will enjoy some of the greatest scenes. Do not forget to bring your camera along to capture some of the breathtaking scenes. Check what the weather will be like, as it is better to go there during clear weather to have the best views.

Sugar Loaf Cable Car

This was the first cable car in Brazil and was launched back in 1912 after the inspiration of a Brazilian engineer known as Augusto Ferreira. The Sugar Loaf is indeed among the world's oldest cable cars. Don't just have a look at it - ride in it!

Tijuca Forest

This is the world's largest urban forest, where you will find different kinds of living creatures from the entire Atlantic Forest. The forest, which covers about 3,200 hectares, was actually replanted in the 1900s due to the massive deforestation of the forest, partly due to coffee plantations. It was Major Gomes Archer who spearheaded the efforts.

There are many other tourist attractions in Rio de Janeiro, including places that will give you the chance to enjoy the popular Samba music and soccer, which are part and parcel of Brazil.
