Rising Damp: Introduction & Prevention

Rising damp is a process just as similar as the process of transferring the water from trees bottom to trees top. Same rising damp is the upward movement of ground water through a permeable masonry wall. The water rises through the masonry via a process called capillarity. Capillarity is a process in which water molecules are electrochemically attracted to mineral surfaces, enabling the water to move vertically through pores of a certain size despite the counteractive force of gravity.

Ground water contains soluble salts like chlorides, nitrates and sulphates. When rising damp occurs, these salts rise up with the water up the wall, the water gets evaporated and the salts remain in the wall. Both chlorides and nitrates absorb greater amount of moisture from the surrounding environment. The greater amount of salt, the greater the absorption of moisture. These salts can even cause the wall to remain damp.

Problems caused by Rising damp:

Paint does not stay on the wall.

Wallpaper lifts and stains appear on the wall.

Plaster falls off, feels soft and spongy and bubbles and white powder or crystal appears.

Stains or white powder appear on walls.

Mortar frets and falls out between bricks and stonework.

When we see the above symptoms in our house, make sure that your house is suffering from the problem of rising damp. To remove the problem, the best and effective way is to re-plaster the walls which is very desirable and is normally recommended. According to Building regulations, all the new houses should be constructed with an effective damp proof course. To treat damp proofing we can also install physical or chemical DPC (damp proof course). Then, any affected plaster or mortar must be removed, and the wall treated before replacing the plaster and repainting. It is most important to remove the rising damp properly and early to ensure there is no long term damage caused to the property.
