To me, spirituality is the positive energy you possessthat has been blocked by your addiction. It is your ownhigher self. Instead of looking for some deity in the sky, Iwant you to go inside of yourself and get in touch with thegood that lies within you. Did you ever see a baby you instantly liked? There are some babies I just don't take to,but then there are others whom I respond to with a smilebecause they are so completely in touch with the goodwithin them. I like the baby even though it doesn't tell me I'm good-looking or nice or that it loves me. It's the baby'senergy I'm experiencing, this joyous feeling of "there'sabsolutely nothing wrong with me." Babies can't tell youabout it. You just sense it. It's as if they're saying, "Aren'tI wonderful?" and of course they are, and you can feel thetremendous amount of energy behind that idea.

Or sometimes that energy is present in an adult whohas died but you feel they are still with you in some waytheir spirit stays with you and continues to nurture you asthe years go by because they have had such a positiveimpact on your life. That's the kind of spirit I mean: not aninvisible authority figure but the positive and constructiveforce that lies in all of us like buried treasure beneath a slag heap of negative and destructive thoughts. As mygood friend Father Leo Booth puts it, "You can take thealcohol out of the alcoholic, but you're still left with the'ick.'" Transcending the "ick" is what spirituality is allabout.
