Rocket French is an on-line French learning system. Does it really work?

WHAT DO YOU GET WITH YOUR PURCHASE?

Rocket French is a software system for download or as a set of CDs. It comes with videos, audio, and software games. In addition, you are given access to a Learning Lounge where you can test your skills, and connect with other users and teachers.

The basic approach is to teach French by Visual Association. Visual association is how you learned your first language. You SAW something and HEARD the word for it at the same time. In this manner you easily and quickly learned the meanings of words. Rocket French tries to duplicate the process with the use of software, audio, and video.

DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

If you are serious and willing to work with the material regularly, Rocket French is a very powerful way to learn to speak French. Ideally, you should try to work with the material for a little time each day (at least 30 min - 1 hr a day). The lessons are designed to build on one another. Because of this, being consistent is very important.

Learning a language is much like learning to ride a bike. For the first little while you may think that you are not getting anywhere. If you persist, however, you will hit a point where things suddenly "fall into place". You will find yourself making sentences without effort and picking up most of the words in the audio recordings.

From there you can go on to learn more vocabulary and more advanced grammar.

IS IT THE BEST WAY TO GO FOR EVERY STUDENT?

Some people find it hard to focus if there is no outside pressure like an upcoming "exam" or an instructor checking their "homework".

Rocket French is a do it yourself approach. It is powerful but you have to provide the consistency yourself.

If you think you might need the pressure of a classroom setting in order to follow through, look into classes at a local college. Remember, however, that classroom instruction will cost much more and can take longer.
