Rockledge Chiropractor, Marco La Starza, doesn't want to offer Fibromyalgia sufferers false hope. However, he has developed a chiropractic protocol that has been successful in treating his Fibromyalgia patients in a matter of days.

Fibromyalgia, according to Dr. La Starza, is a condition related to spinal malfunction, which is actually a choking off of the spinal cord structures, but not so much the spinal cord as the meninges; the coverings of the spinal cord itself.

Although Fibromyalgia is defined as a chemical imbalance causing hypersensitivity in the nervous system that amplifies pain, the symptoms go far beyond just a chemical imbalance and pain, according to Dr. La Starza.

"The misaligned vertebrae, also know as a subluxation, pulls on the meninges, which is not that flexible, which attaches to all the nerve roots all the way down the spine," he said. Since the nerves from the spine have to pass through the meninges, the pulling causes all the nerves to fire at one time. "Now these poor people have symptoms of everything that comes from these nerves, and so you will hear them say they have pain, they have numbness, they have tingling, they have burning, they're cold, they itch; those are just all the proprioceptive fibers that go to the brain from the different areas," according to Dr. La Starza. To make matters worse Fibromyalgia suffers can't sleep due to their intense pain, in turn causing their symptom to worsen, and ultimately leading to chronic fatigue.

Researchers agree that many problems can be attributed to some form of an accident in the person's life, such as an auto accident, fall, physical abuse or even possibly surgery. These physical stresses affect our lives. Also, chemical and mental stress, play a major role as well. They also agree that many times it is a problem is a malfunction of the nervous system.

As relief comes for patients, their dependency on painkillers, such as morphine, Vicodin and Oxycontin, recedes. Some people become addicted to medications and it's a part of their life to take meds on a regular basis. "Most of my patients are either off of all their meds, or 70% are off them within six weeks," Dr. La Starza says. "So they usually leave here without meds. Obviously, the reasons why people get off their medications is because they become healthy. Healthy people don't need to or rely on medications."
