A person may well be aware of the changes to their body but steroid abuse can have an equally damaging affect on the brain. It can lead to memory loss, emotional imbalance and depression. The abuser will often suffer from severe and frightening mood swings, referred to informally in the media as 'roid' rages. This is caused by damage to the nerve cells, affecting the interaction between mind and body.

The change in production of testosterone from anabolic steroids can have severe effects on the reproductive organs of both men and women. These changes are irreversible and it is important that people are aware of these symptoms. Men can suffer from smaller genitals, lower sperm count and in some cases hair loss.

When discussing stopping someone taking steroids, it is not enough just to get them to stop. Immediately stopping can do just as much harm as continued use. A medical professional can do what is called the bridge. The bridge is the point between when the steroids are artificially affecting your hormones and when the body returns to its natural system of hormone production.

The question then arises about steroids, if they are so dangerous, why do doctors prescribe them? The crucial difference is that doctors will never prescribe anabolic steroids to younger people to build up muscle. What doctors will usually prescribe are called corticosteroids and these are used to reduced swelling. They do not build muscle in the way anabolic steroids do and therefore are not abused. Remember, any illegally obtained steroids are likely to be up to a hundred times more than the recommended dose. The best way to build up the body is with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
