Role Of Temporary Staffing Industry In The Spread Of Employment

Temporary staffing industry during the last decade has witnessed a consolidation

of the market within its core markets that is located and is visible in the United States and the European markets of the United Kingdom, France and Netherlands. As per the estimates of the Staffing Industry Analysts, Inc. 2003 the temporary staffing industry is now worth U.S. worth $120 billion annually. The temporary staffing industry has now spread its network to recently emerging markets such as Central and Eastern Europe, Latin American and East Asia.

The temporary staffing agencies are playing a key role not only within the various national territories but also through their ability to mediate migration flows, both between the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and between the region and Western Europe. The U.S. staffing companies had employed an average of 2.95 million temporary and contract workers per business per day during the third quarter of 2012 as per the recent data released by the American Staffing Association.

From July to September- 2012, the number of temporary and contract workers in the United States staffing firms on an average business day was 4.3% higher than those of compared with the third quarter of 2011. This growth is 11th in the series in a sequential quarter based on year on year staffing industry staff growth since the end of the recession in 2009.

Temporary staffing industry in itself is playing the role of an employer by acting as an employer to the temporary workers or temporary employees that they hire out to third party firms. For instance, Manpower is one of the largest suppliers of temporary agency labor globally that markets itself as employer of temps that it hires out, providing various facilities like holiday pay, training and a range of other benefits. The temporary employment agencies are now operating on local as well as on global basis. The typical structure of a temporary staffing industry can be broadly divided into three types and these are:

1. Multinational agencies: These type of temporary agencies work or operate both in the United States and in other countries as well. These agencies have multiple branches within the U.S. (often many hundreds of branches), all of these have operations outside the U.S., and some of them include multiple agencies.

2. National agencies: These type agencies are based solely in the U.S. with office branches at national or regional levels. The agencies have at least ten multiple branches located within the country.

3. Local or regional agencies: The third type temporary agencies are based in the U.S. with the office branches at local level. These agencies usually have a single branch even though some may have multiple branches. Thus, these temporary staffing agencies are playing an important role in the spread of employment through their different typical settings.
