In one of the most challenging undertakings ever attempted in the video gaming history, Rome: Total War covers and recreates conflicts within the three hundred year span encompassing the period from the Tunic Wars all the way through to the death of Augustus all in highly detailed and color full 3 dimensional splendor.

Upon his death, Augustus willed control of Rome itself to his adopted son, like so much personal property, the Republic was post-historically declared dead. While he never declared himself emperor, functionally, the move signaled the arrival of the Imperial era of Rome. But expansion packs allow traveling forward in time to the end of the Roman world during the barbarian invasions.

This epic game allows players to command armies consisting of brightly and accurately costumed soldiers, with up to 10,000 soldiers fielded at one time during massive and recordable epic battles. Campaigns can be fought using the games internally designed conflagrations based on historical events, or players can design their own campaigns.

Campaigns are viewed in a dramatic third person view, and the resulting battles of conquest and domination can even be recorded and played back later for enjoyment and strategic evaluation. These recorded game-plays are almost as exciting as watching them unfold in real life or on TV, and these recording can be shared and used as tutorials to teach others the consequence, for better or worse, of their personal play style, whether it be conservative or voracious. Rome: Total War is a totally immersive gaming experience.

Game play can be designed to last over a single battle, or even spanning centuries, depending on the time commitment players are willing to put forth. You have complete control of ever facet of life within the game from custom built or provided campaigns. The degree of control is unequalled in gaming history. You have access to control and develop not only the strategic aspect of military battles, but you can also influence civil, religious and military development.

When the game was first released, enthusiastic players traveled to and stayed in hotels in Rome to conduct their epic warfare, and several Rome hotels offered packages where players were allowed to rent entire floors and conference halls in which to do battle with other gaming fans from all over the world.
