NHL scout Ron Harris had a feeling Mario's cards would soon be worth more than his. " He's the best I've seen at making plays and passing," he said of the junior superstar.He was a member of the Chelsea side which won the FA Youth Cup in 1961 and made his senior club debut in February 1962 in a 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday.

He is now a football pundit (especially on Chelsea), an in-demand after-dinner speaker and recently penned an autobiography, Chopper: A Chelsea Legend. He also has a suite named after him at Stamford Bridge, in honour of his legendary status at the club.

While many of Chelsea's star players departed during the 1970s for various reasons, Harris remained an ever-present in the side throughout a decade which saw them relegated twice and promoted once, although he lost the club captaincy to the 18-year-old Ray Wilkins. He finally left Chelsea in 1980 to become a player-coach at Brentford, having played a record 795 games for Chelsea. He later had a brief stint as player-manager of Aldershot.

The truth of the matter was that opponents were always trying to "lure" Mario into taking stupid penalties, reasoning that this was the best way to keep him off the ice. Indeed, during his first two years in the juniors, a team's worst player could simply harass Mario until he retaliated. A couple of punches would be thrown, and both skaters would be sent to the penalty box. Obviously, this was a trade off that other teams were all too happy to make-and one that drove Mario's coach creazy. By his third season, however, Mario had learned to hold his temper, and to accept the constant slashing and hacking as a kind of compliment. Yet now he was accused of being "soft" One night, in a game against shawinigan, Mario was being hooked and chopped until he decided enough was enough. He turned, dropped his gloves,and punched his opponent right in the nose, and punched his opponent right in the nose. Mario skated to the penalty box, while the shawinigan player lay sprawled on the ice.
