Root Canal Filling
Root canal filling is known as endodontic therapy in dental science.Itis a specialized
procedure known to save a badly decayed tooth by cleaning and rehabilitating the damaged root cavity. This widely practiced dental procedure entails the steps of cleaning, filling, and rehabilitating a severely decayed or dead tooth.
Every tooth is a live unit consisting of a root cavity, tiny blood vessels, and nerves. Oral health problems such as gingivitis (gum disease), long-term tooth decay and traumato a tooth can damage the live organs in a root of the tooth and eventually cause the tooth to die, fracture, and fall out. If left untreated, a decayed or damaged tooth will form an abscess in the tip of the root and lead to inflammation and acute pain. A root canal filling would clean away the bacteria caused by the abscess and ensure that infection is curbed. The root canal filling treatment is known as endodontic therapy because it treats the pulp andthe finer details of a tooth, such as the nerve, tissue, and blood vessels. The only alternative to a root canal therapy on a dead or dying tooth is to extract the tooth to prevent infections and other oral complications.
A dentist will first examine the tooth to determine the level of decay and damage before makinga decision between a routine filling and root canal filling. An x-ray of the tooth is obtained to evaluate the number of root canals in the tooth, the level of decay, and to check for abscess formations. After the decision to administer a root canal filling, the patient is given local anesthesia after which the tooth is first drilled to create a hole to reach the root canal cavity. The dentist will then proceed to clean out bacteria, infection, and decayed pulp from the root canal cavity using dental files. Furthermore,an anti-bacterial solution is applied into the cavity to wash out all traces of bacteria before closing the opening with a temporary filling. During the waiting period between the first and second visit, the dentist would prescribe an antibiotic course and pain relief medication to treat inflammation and infection.
During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary filling; examine the root cavity for further traces of bacteria. If satisfied, the dentist will then permanently seal the root cavity with gutta percha a putty like substance. If the exterior structure and appearance of the tooth had damage, the dentist would proceed to rehabilitate the tooths appearance by customizing a porcelain crown or veneer. The cosmetic enhancement of the treated tooth would be an additional procedure to be decided by the patient in discussion with the dentist and is not included in the cost for a root canal filling. A root canal filling is more costly than a routine filling because the procedure is specialized and requires more time and visits.
