Rosacea Is A Common But Frequently Overlooked Condition

Rosacea is a common condition of the skin which currently affects over 14 million Americans

. Although frequently overlooked, rosacea can lead to serious disfigurement of the face. It can also seriously affect the emotional wellbeing of an individual as well as lead to ocular complications if not treated.

Although little information abounds about its epidemiology, people between 30 and 50 years are the ones who are most likely to be affected. Also, people of a fairer skin complication are more at risk of attack than those of darker skin complexion. Also, studies show that twice as many women as men are attacked. However, the condition is more severe in men than in women.

There are chances that rosacea could be under diagnosed because some physicians are not normally able to recognize the disorder, and also because some patients may not be willing to discuss the symptoms with their doctors. Although it is fairly uncommon, rosacea still attacks people in their teenage years. Currently, rosacea prevalence in the US is on an upward trend. However, this is not because of the increase in incidence but because of the aging generation of the 'baby boom'.

Rosacea stems from an inflammatory process of which not much is known. The triggers include certain varieties of foods as well as several environmental, psychological, chemical and emotional factors. However, it is not clear what role these factors play in causing or worsening the condition. Specifically, experts have not been able to fully understand the connection between stress and rosacea.

Complications

Rosacea victims are known to suffer from a variety of social and emotional stigmas. When facial features begin changing, and pustules, papules and other unfavorable features progress, patients will have a decrease in their self-esteem and confidence. In addition, patients tend to feel that due to their facial disfigurement, their sexual desirability is lessened. This may also impede their career advancement. It has also been noted that rosacea sufferers resort to alcoholism.

Patients with rosacea also suffer from ocular complications, which, in severe cases, may lead to replacement of cornea. It is important that patients who suspect corneal involvement consult early with an ophthalmologist.

Treatment

The first step in rosacea therapy is to avoid triggers which may worsen the condition. Physicians need to advise their patients on the need to limit their exposure to the sun, and to normally use sunscreen products. According to studies, sunscreen products containing simethicone or cyclomethicone are better tolerated by rosacea patients. Patients need to particularly avoid the use of heavy makeup or skin products that irritate.

Antibiotics

Rosacea is treated by antibiotics such as tetracycline and metronidazole (flagyl). Gel (metroGel) and topical metronidazole (MetroCream), is just as effective as tetracycline when administered twice daily. It is the choice for many people who are suffering from popular and pustular rosacea. There are also studies that suggest that telangiectasis in certain patients is reduced by tropical metronidazole. When using the antibiotic or cream, it should be applied on the entire face and not on the affected spots only.
