Why I Started A Running Blog
Blogging was something that I never really thought about until a few months ago when I picked up a nasty hip injury. Relegated to the house with no way or participating in my chosen sport of running for a good year or so, I decided that instead of moping around and feeling sorry for myself I would take action and start my own
Running Blog. Not only was this a great way for me to keep myself entertained and occupied, after the first few articles I realised that I actually knew quite a lot about running, and blogging was a perfect way for me to pass on my knowledge to others. Even though I couldnt train or directly coach other runners down at my local running club, blogging allowed me to spread my messages out to a wider audience and meet lots of interesting people a the same time.
Starting a Running Blog
If you are starting up your own running, jogging or fitness blog then I would like to offer you the following advice:
1.Make sure you are passionate about running - This sounds like a simple tip but making sure that you are very into your chosen topic will help you not only get though that annoying writers block but will also help you maintain your interest in blogging when things aren't always going your way and say for example your blog isn't generating any traffic.
2.Get your facts right!- If you stick with your blogging for an extended period of time then eventually you are going to be attracting large numbers of readers to your blog. This isnt a problem if you are just say writing about your training goals and achievements, but if you start giving things like health and injury advice out then you might find yourself getting into trouble if you dont really know what you are talking about! TO avoid the headache, make sure you get your facts straight right from the word go.
3.Read other blogs- Again, this sounds like simple advice but reading and commenting on other running or fitness blogs in your subject niche will not only give you inspiration for your own blog posts but will also bring you a constant stream of site visitors and boost your rankings in Google. This is essential if you are looking to attract people through search engines that will never have seen or heard about your blog before.
4.Make it interesting! - I have lost count of all the boring blogs that I have visited out there on the world wide web. There are plenty of blog writers who really dont do themselves any favours and write post after boring post that makes me want to go to sleep every time I read it. Running and fitness has the added annoyance that as a subject as a whole it is quite boring to anyone outside the industry so make sure you post something interesting when you write. For example, on my running blog I managed to win a competition where I met two Olympic athletes. This gave me no end of material to write interesting blog posts about and meant that people kept coming back to my blog for more. Now I am not saying that you need to go out there and track some celebrities down, but put yourself in the readers shoes when you are writing your running or fitness blog posts and ask yourself if you would honestly like to read what you are writing. If the answer is no then scrap it, take a break and start again!
5.Dont over post- Nothing is worse than over posting. Not only will it knacker you out but also it isnt fair on your readers who will almost certainly have too much to read already thanks to their busy modern lives! Post at most twice a week and really think about the topics that you are writing about. Trust me, it will be better for everyone if you do!
So there you have it - My top five tips for starting a fitness or running blog.
