Rural Roads and the Dangers

I am the sort of driver that often longs to overtake dawdling motorists, but the fear of having an accident prevents me from doing so. Ive often deliberated on overtaking when I am running late, but never had the guts to do so. I look at over takers on country roads and think about how foolish they are, risking the lives of themselves, their passengers and other road users. I'm a little more confident on the motorway, but I always leave plenty of space to ensure that I have judged the situation correctly and get a bit worried when cars come racing up behind me, especially the ones that indicate for you to move over. How rude!

But road safety organisations are calling for greater training on the dangers of overtaking to drivers. A recent survey by the organisation Brake has found that around forty seven percent of drivers have overtaken on rural roads, as many as twenty three percent doing this on a monthly basis.

The solution it seems is post test training, to give drivers a little more back ground and experience when it comes to negotiation the winding country roads that are synonymous with our country. The training will not only deal with the country roads but other issues that new drivers have identified such as night driving and driving in adverse weather conditions, not to mention the often scary motorway driving and driving at high speeds.

Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, said: "Most crashes are not caused by breaking the speed limit but by the driver's poor decision-making. A blanket speed reduction to 50mph will not stop the 'looked but failed to see', 'misjudgement of bends', 'emerged from junction into path of vehicle' and the many of [the] other human errors that the police record as the real reason for a crash."
