For one, the generator doesnt need to be hauled around or placed in the safest spot at a campsite, an installed generator will always be in the same spot and in a compartment that is safe and secure. Two, an installed RV generator will typically be quieter than a portable one. With the correct exhaust and muffler system an installed genset will be safer and with less noise. A portable generator can be very loud and distracting to the serene and relaxing nature of the campground. Lastly, installed usually are better generators overall and are more efficient and smoother running.

With any genset used in an RV, always make sure it is properly maintained. A simple rule of thumb is to always run the generator at least once a month even in the off season. A genset can become out of balance, gummed up and clunky if its not run periodically. Sometimes the fuel should even be drained if its been several months or a full season since it has been used last. Contaminants that are left to settle in a fuel system can cause major problems in a generator. A fresh supply of fuel should be considered when the unit has not been used in a while.
