SEO Quick Tips: The Title Attribute & The ALT Attribute by lee frankis

The Title Attribute

The title Attribute is important in the role of improving your pagerank. Simply put, a link with a title attribute, ranks better than a link without. This is because the title helps to further describe the landing page of the link, which favors well with google search algorithms.

How to Use The Title Attribute Correctly

here is an example of a well written link which includes the title attribute(please ignore the "." at the start & end of the tag)

The ALT Attribute

The ALT attribute, part of the IMG tag in html is often overlooked but it's really important for SEO that you get it right. Here's why;

1. The ALT attribute describes the image to the web spiders, therefore explaining what the image is! (Spiders CANNOT See Pictures!)

2. The ALT attribute also describes an alternative to the image for the visually impaired or users with audio/text only devices, increasing your potential audience.

How To Write ALT Attributes Correctly

Here's the best way to write your ALT attributes for the purpose of being user and spider friendly. They are an alternative to the image, not just a desciption of the image.

1. Write a short descriptive sentence of the image, offer an alternative (don't just describe the image, e.g. if the image is a warning sign, just write warning! not a description of the colors and shapes)

2. Avoid stringing lots of keywords together in alt tags. Too many keywords lead to poor content quality, always make sure you write things that make sense.

Heres an example

For example, an image of a boat, on say an auction site could be described as;

"Large Sail Boat in Perfect Condition With a White and Gold Trim"

This descriptive ALT, should pick up on other keywords on the page, such as the condition and colors of the boat. This is favored by Google's spiders because it's descriptive and helpful to the user.
