Tips For Being A Great Boss

Great bosses are hard to come by. If you are a manager and you are looking for a way to balance being a supportive and encouraging boss, while still getting plenty of work out of your employees, there are plenty of ways you can improve your managerial skills. One of the challenges bosses face is offering support and being understanding without seeming like a pushover. On the flip side, bosses often see like jerks and ruin their employee's motivation by acting too harshly and not allowing creativity to bloom. Finding a balance is a challenge, but there are ways you can keep employees happy and motivate them to do their best. One important thing to focus on is building a spirit of teamwork. Team building events and corporate events can help you plan celebrate accomplishments and build a sense of spirit that is refreshing for employees.A great way to be perceived as a good boss is to show a professional side. It is good to find ways to connect with employees. Those who are parents; have art or music interests, enjoy certain hobbies or forms of entertainment or who are dealing with family issues can discuss these issues with employees. Make sure you have professional boundaries, but if your employees know that you are struggling with a teenager or you enjoy the theater will feel as if you are more human and easier to talk to.One of the biggest misconceptions by bosses is that being a disciplinarian makes you an unpopular boss. The opposite is true, except in those cases where employees are doing things they should not be doing. If you discipline employees when they are in need of it, your other employees will be behind you. There is nothing worse than working with a person who gets away with everything and takes advantage of a boss's giving and understanding nature. Be reasonable, but if you have an employee who is not pulling his or her weight, you need to deal with the problem. It is important for bosses to focus on the big picture. If the work is getting done and everyone is getting along, chances are things are fine. Be aware of what is happening, but do not micromanage your employees. If all of your employees work hard and one day someone shows up a minute late for the work day, let it go. If it becomes a problem, you can address it at that point. Being a good boss is a little like good parenting. You need to give some freedom and room for mistakes, but ultimately step in if there is a serious problem. Finally, do your best to be sympathetic, but do not enable problems. Life will continue to happen and your employees will need some understanding. However, if one person seems to really be struggling, you may need to take measures to even out the work in the department. You want to be flexible, but you do not want to upset other employees who do their work by always impressing the boss.
