Not to be left behind Saab has introduced the Saab 9-4X, a crossover vehicle to compete against the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Audi Q5. Saab claim that the 9-4X brings car-like handling and ride qualities to the crossover segment. Extensive development testing has helped Saab claim the 9-4X will be superior to its competitors in ride refinement, performance and handling.

The new Saab in Abergeleis available with an efficient all-aluminium 2.8 litre turbo V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and Saab XWD. The light and compact, 24-valve engine features variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust sides, and boasts a power rating of 300 bhp which is typical of a larger engine.

Saab have positioned the 9-4X between the 9-3X and the 9-5 Saloon, physically it looks bigger than the 9-3X and smaller than the 9-5 saloon. You can tell it is a Saab by its clean, uncluttered design and signature motifs, such as its wraparound-effect windshield, ice block lighting theme, driver-focused cockpit and flexible cargo handling.

Saab's aviation heritage can be seen in the cabin, there is an aircraft attitude-style speed read-out, green illumination for the needles of the three main dials and traditional Saab 'joystick' adjusters for the mesh-style air vents.

In car entertainment consists of a 10-speaker Bose system with 5.1 surround sound and an eight-inch touch screen, hard disk-based navigation system includes a bird's eye map view and 10 GB storage for music files.

The 9-4X is due to go on sale in the UK in the later part of 2011; it goes on sale in the USA a bit earlier so we'll get their reviews before it comes out here.
