Safe Driving: Avoiding Collisions in Highways by:Ivonne Jade Agustin
Almost every day, we see or hear about road accidents that inflict massive damages on properties
, but still, statistics show that we will be involved in at least one road accident in our lifetime.
These accidents will cost the liable party great deal of fortune as he will be responsible for all the medical bills incurred by the victim for his injuries. In cases of fatalities, higher compensatory damages are expected for the lost life of an individual.
To avoid this, preventive measures should always be taken so as not to be the victim or the cause of these road accidents.
Dealing with Obstructions
Highway collisions can cause injuries that will forever remind us of our negligence. By removing ourselves from harm's way, it is important that we know the following things that should be avoided while on road:
Road Rage / Aggressive Drivers. It is important that we remain calm even if a motorist's behavior is irritating. Rage will solve nothing and can even extend your time on the road because of senseless arguments.
If you encounter an aggressive driver (they are the one who constantly honks and screams obscene words and profanities), it is best to stay out of their way as they have a tendency to be violent and might use their vehicle as a weapon against you. Be the bigger man and just drive away.
Speeding. Nothing is more important than our safety. Whether it is a job interview or a date with a special someone that we are rushing to get to, we should still follow the prescribed speed limit in each area.
We should keep in mind to go slower on residential neighborhoods, school, and church zones to avoid hitting crossing pedestrians.
Tailgating. It is dangerous to keep a close distance between you and the preceding vehicle because the driver's sudden decrease in speed can result to a rear-end collision where you will be held liable.
Every driver should be responsible in maintaining a considerable amount of distance from other vehicles so that they can adjust to the sudden change of speed.
Drunk Drivers. It is negligent for someone to drive after drinking too much. In fact, in some establishments, the bartender takes the keys of a person who had too much to drink and has no one to drive him home.
If you suspect a motorist of DUI because of his driving behavior, alert the authorities before he can be a danger to himself and to other motorists.
Road Constructions / Weather Changes. If you are not familiar with the road you are travelling on, it is best to go slow so that you can see warning devices that indicate road constructions and other road glitches that you may encounter.
Motorists travelling on a rainy day should keep in mind that roads are slippery and so their breaks may not be as effective. Again, slowing down is the safest way to go.
Fatigue. For those who are too sleepy to drive, it would be wise to find a spot where they can legally park so they can rest and avoid falling asleep while driving.
Vehicle Problems. For drivers who suspect malfunction in their vehicle, it is better to be safe and check it out on the shoulder lane before the defect gets out of hand and cause accidents.
Distractions. Drivers should be responsible in the proper use of their mobile phones. They should free their hands of it while driving as it can distract them and divert their attention.
