Safety And Durability Of Aluminum Vs. Wrought Iron

Every house or a commercial, business property requires fencing around in order to ensure security

, but choosing the right material for fencing is often an overwhelming task. There are many materials available for the purpose and each has its own specialty. Some of the commonly used materials include, iron, wood, glass, aluminum and PVC. However aluminum and wrought iron are the most commonly used materials for this purpose. These two materials are widely used for fencing and railing in and around the properties. Both these materials are not only stylish but are also functional in nature.

Following are the advantages as well as the disadvantages of both the materials, which gives an insight into the durability and functionality of these materials.

Advantages of Wrought Iron Railing

Wrought iron is malleable in nature and can be easily molded to form railings depicting the antique look. Once made, these railings are strong and sturdy and last for many years. As it can be bent and cast into various shapes, homeowners can display their own individual style. Installing wrought iron railings is easy and can be done without any difficulties as DIY projects. Most homeowners get the wrought iron panels molded into desired shape and are then installed manually.

Disadvantages of Wrought Iron Railings

One of the greatest disadvantages of wrought iron railings is that it can rust very soon, especially during moist and damp weather. The moisture reacts chemically with the iron and thus causes it to form another compound known as iron oxide, which is a much weaker material. The railings thus show cracks and holes throughout causing the railing to break easily. Thus it isn"t advisable to use this material, especially in areas that experience cold and damp weather.

Advantages of Aluminum Railings

Like wrought iron, aluminum is malleable in nature and thus can be worked upon to form various railing designs that suit personal taste of the homeowner. The clean and sleek look of aluminum railings enhances the beauty of the home. One of the best advantages of aluminum is that it does not rust and can be thus safely used in any surroundings. Outside elements such as snow, rain and extreme sunlight do little to the railings and it maintains its structure as well as color always. Aluminum can also be powder coated to any color suiting the garden and home dcor. It is also lighter than iron and therefore much easier to install. Most of these railings consist of pre punched holes making the installation project much easier. They are extremely durable and can last for many decades without any change.

Disadvantages of aluminum Railings

It is notable that there are not much disadvantages of aluminum railings except that they tend to become whitish in color in moisture conditions.
