Online dating is a great way to meet people as the internet provides you with a wealth of people to choose from and also gives you plenty of choices when it comes to narrowing down potential matches. In the non virtual world, our sights are limited to those whom we met back in school, our co workers, neighbors, church mates, etc. But on the internet, the number of people you can meet and interact with is virtually endless.

One setback though is the fact that it is indeed very easy to lie about yourself online, and that all the information posted on a person's profile are all inaccurate and were created for the purpose of attracting someone gullible. To keep yourself safe, do exercise caution when online dating, and below are some tips that will help you in doing so.

The most important rule is to never give out any of your personal information, like your real name, phone number, address, the school you go to or where you work, etc. It also follows that you should not give out information that can lead to discovering personal information about yourself. For instance, if you give out your home phone number, you give your virtual date the chance of knowing your address. Just give out details sparingly or avoid it altogether unless you are totally sure.

Whenever you feel awkward or uneasy, end everything between you and your online date. It's better to call it quits this early in the relationship rather than when you've actually met and made real bonds and connections with each other. Always trust your instincts as more often than not, it's pretty accurate.

When the day comes that you decide to meet with your online date in person, make sure you ask him or her to meet in a public place and don't invite him/her over to your house and don't go to theirs. Also, give your friends a heads up where you're going and have some of them on the lookout in case you need to call the date to an early end. Also, if your online date asks you for some money for a bus or plane ticket to meet you, forget it if they really want to meet you, they'll find and make a way to do so.
