Drifting is a technique of driving whereby the driver over steers on purpose, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels when the car turns, while keeping vehicle control and a high exit speed. A car drifts when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle prior to the corner apex, and the front wheels are facing the opposite direction to the turn so, while the car is turning right for example, the wheels are pointing left. Modern drifting started out in Japan over 30 years ago, when Kunimitsu Takahashi, motorcycling legend and then driver, pioneered the first drifting techniques in the 1970s. One of his most notable achievements was hitting the apex the point at which the car is nearest to the inside of a turn- at high speed and then drifting through the corner, maintaining a high speed exit. Professional racing led to street racing, and by the mid 90s, drifting had found its way over to the states and eventually Australasia and Europe. Now would-be racing drivers are "getting the drift", and are signing up for driving experience days to remember. There are various driving experience packages available. Drift lessons provide the driver with an introduction to the sport by a fully trained professional instructor who will be able to teach a variety of different techniques such as corner to corner braking, feint drift, heel and toe and power over.

The driving experience begins with a safety and technique briefing, after which the instructor familiarises the driver with the car. Driving experiences such as drifting lessons allow the driver to experience a car-chase scenario similar to those made famous by films such The Fast and the Furious trilogy and Initial D.

Thesedriving experience days usually take place on a contained tarmac paddock within the venue, where the driver can learn tips and tricks such as a 360 figure of eight and controlled power slides.

The driving experience days can take place as either a half-day or a full day course and cost from around 100 to 200.Driving experiencesare available to first time drifters, for fun or to get a head start with getting into drifting. Intermediate drifters can also take part in practice sessions while receiving directions from qualified instructors, with professional drifters available to give you advice along the way.
