Safety Is Key In Science Labs
It is important to discover and learn, especially when it comes to science
. This means that you must experiment.
But, you must remember that safety precautions always need to be made when in the lab. Safety must always be the number one priority whenever you step into the lab to experiment.
The main safety categories that can be found in a science lab include fire safety, glassware safety, sharp instrument safety, eye safety, electrical safety, chemical safety, and eye safety.
At some point in experimenting, all of these will need to be put to use. Fire safety is important if there is going to be any fire, heating, or burning device used at any point during the experiment.
Examples of the use of fire would include the use of a Bunsen burners, stoves, ovens, matches, alcohol lamps, and sometimes the use of a magnifying glass. All of these items involve the use of some form of fire and flame.
When using fire or heat, make sure you use gloves or other protection if picking up a warm or hot object; keeping body parts into a flame; making sure you know where to turn off the gas; and ensuring that long hair is tied back and long sleeves are rolled up so that they don't accidentally catch on fire.
Glassware safety is another important safety feature in any science lab. Glass can generally be found throughout a lab area so be aware of it even if you are not using it in an experiment.
If not handled with care, glassware can cause serious harm. Make others in the area aware if you break glassware so that they can be careful when walking in certain areas.
Immediately clean up any broken glass and make sure that it is properly cleaned. Be careful not to touch the glass with your bare hands, it is better to use a broom or vacuum to pick up glass pieces and maintain safety.
Ensure that you have properly and carefully cleaned up all of the small pieces of glass. Dispose of the broken glass in an appropriate container.
Sharp instrument safety deals with any pointed instruments. These would include items such as knives, scissors, tweezers, and any other objects with pointed or jagged edges.
When handling any sharp objects, be careful not to make swift movements, be aware of what is going on around you, and don't play or roughhouse. Eye safety is very important. Often labs require that you wear safety glasses.
The purpose of safety glasses or goggles is to prevent any damage to your vision. If you do use goggles, alcohol wipes should be used to clean the goggles before and after using the goggles.
If something gets into your eyes, the first thing you need to do is immediately stop what you are doing. Get to a sink as fast as possible and proceed to flush out the eye. Vented safety goggles should always be used when working with chemicals.
Electrical safety should always be taken into consideration when using plugs or any electrical current. When you need to unplug a cord, hold the plug firmly by the insulating cover. Do the same when plugging in items.
It is not safe to unplug an electrical device by pulling on its cord. Also, be careful not to cut cords that are connected to an electrical outlet.
Chemical safety is also important in the lab. Be careful to keep chemicals off your skin and out of your mouth and eyes.
If you get any chemical on your skin or in your eyes wash or flush it out immediately. When you take safety into consideration it is likely you will have a successful experiment. With so many threats to safety it is important to be very aware of safety when in any science lab.
