Windshields Are Safety Armor For The Car
Safety is important
Safety is important. It is important no matter what you are doing - if you are riding a horse, driving a motorcycle, or riding in a car you should always keep safety in mind.
When it comes to cars the most important safety feature is the windshield. It will protect the driver and passengers from bugs, rocks, rain, snow, sun, and so many other things.
Your vehicle's windshield not only protects you from little things, but also, from big things. Windshields play a vital role in the prevention of injury or death in the event of a collision or rollover.
We all work to ensure that the safety features in our cars are kept up to standard including the seatbelts, airbags, tire pressure, and tire tread. Windshields are just as important to keep up to date as these other safety features.
These safety features, including the windshield, are all part of a safety network. This network is commonly referred to as the vehicle's Safety Restraint System, or SRS, and it works to help you get safely from one destination to the next.
All the individual components of the Safety Restraint System are dependent on each other functioning properly. If there is a compromise or weakness in just one aspect of the SRS, the likelihood of other parts not working properly is high.
For example, seatbelts and airbags are dependent upon one another in order to provide full support in the event of an accident. Both of these features function as body support. Additionally, most of your vehicle's safety features are also dependent upon the windshield and it functioning properly.
The windshield plays a major role in the structural integrity of your vehicles passenger compartment. Due to this fact, the windshield plays a key role in the event of a rollover accident. When it functions properly it is able to keep its shape and possibly resist breaking.
As technology increases so does windshield protection. Every auto windshield is made of two sheets of glass, with a thin layer of polyvinyl butyrate between the two outer layers.
In the event of a collision, the glass may break. Even if it breaks, because of the way it has been manufactured the glass will not shatter.
The thin layer of adhesive plastic that is found in the middle will keep the glass together. This feature in the glass will help keep the passengers safe in two ways.
First, the adhesive will prevent the majority of the glass from shattering and causing cuts and scratches to those in the car. This greatly decreases injuries that can easily be caused by flying glass.
Secondly, it allows the windshield to provide somewhat of a cushion to the passengers, should they strike the windshield. The polyvinyl butyrate is flexible. This helps to reduce the amount of force exerted upon impact.
Windshields are safer now than ever. It is a huge benefit that windshields are constructed from glass the way that they are, rather than being constructed from plastic.
Plastic would not provide the same amount of flexibility and cushion during an accident. Maintaining your windshield is not very hard. Only occasionally will it need maintenance.
If there are cracks it is best to get them filled as soon as possible. If the entire windshield needs to be replaced take the time to replace it before it gets any worse.
One of the most common problems with windshields is cracking. This occurs from small rocks or pebbles that hit the windshield when driving on the freeway or highway.
It is important to get them fixed as soon as possible because a small crack may spread and get larger. Keep in mind that cracks tend to spread faster in colder weather.
When you take the time to maintain your car windshield your car will be a safer place for you and your passengers to drive in.
