Here are some of the dangers that playground child swings pose and different safety measures that should be taken to curb them.

Some of the notable causes were regulation of child labor and provision of safe public playgrounds for children. All these efforts were not in vain. Some reforms were made and in the early 1900s most cities started allocating public funds for the construction of playgrounds.

Since then, kids have been enjoying their play time comfortably in the playgrounds. However, nowadays, this gift that was sent from heaven has started to haunt the parents and kids. Accidents have become frequent and kids are getting injured every now and then as they play. In fact, it is estimated that about 200,000 kids suffer serious injuries that require emergency room treatment, every year. Most of those accidents are attributed to swings, which are now considered to be the playground equipment that is most likely to cause injuries in the play area.

To control this, several recommendations regarding construction and installation of swings have been put in place. Some of them include the use of closed S hooks and firmly fixed hardware that cannot be dismantled without using the right equipment. Also, the swing should have no parts that protrude more than an eighth of an inch. In order to reduce the number of falls, it is recommended that the support structures be constructed in such a way that they discourage climbing. If they are A-frames, the crossbars should be omitted.

Fiber ropes should not be used to hang the swings. This is because they weaken with time and might break and fatally injure kids. The seats should not be made of metal or wood. It is recommended that you use plastic or rubber seats. In addition to this, the swings should not be supported by composite structures.

In order to reduce collision, each swing should be placed at a safe distance from the others. The minimum distance should be 24 inches from the other swings. For toddler swings, the spacing is set at 20 inches. The distance between a swing and the support should be 30" for normal and 20" for toddler swings. They should be located far away from other equipment, at least twice the height on the front and back and more than 6ft on each side. All these, measures are taken to ensure that kids are safe while playing. So follow them when setting up playground child swings in your home or in a public place.
