Safety Planning Before You Hike
The United States has many beautiful places to enjoy hiking
, and with the weather getting cooler, you may want to take advantage of this healthy sport. To enjoy your hike to its fullest, be prepared for expected or unexpected emergencies. Emergencies can occur anywhere, so you need to be prepared with first aid and survival equipment. Here are a few tips to consider before you go.
Tip # 1 Always Have a Partner
Never hike alone. When you start planning your hike, find a friend who can go with you. The companionship is great, plus, if you get hurt, you will need someone to help you get back down the trail or go get help. You never know when you might trip over a tree root or rock. Also, there are poisonous snake everywhere in the country and you might get bitten.
Tip # 2 Be Prepared with a First Aid Kit
Minor emergencies can occur anywhere. Since there will be nowhere to buy supplies in the woods, having basic first aid supplies with you is essential. This would include antibiotic ointment, bandages and wipes specifically made to counter the effects of your coming into contact with poisonous plants such as poison oak or poison ivy.
Tip # 3 Be Prepared with a Basic Survival Kit.
While you certainly hope that you will never be stranded in the woods, emergencies can occur anywhere. For this reason, you need to have food and water with you. Besides the basics, your survival kit should have a whistle, so you can signal for help. Cell phones don't always work when you are out in the middle of nowhere. You also need some sort of protection from the elements such as a rain poncho. A weather radio can warn you of changes in the weather that might affect your hike. If you are on any medications, don't forget to pack those in case of an emergency.
Tip # 4 Wear Proper Clothing and Quality Hiking Boots
When hiking, your clothing should not only be comfortable but help protest your skin. Long sleeves and long pants can protect you from tree limb scratches and from poisonous plants rubbing your skin. Invest is a good quality hiking boot to give your feet the support and traction that they need. Make sure that they fit properly and are comfortable for long hikes.
When you go hiking, you want to return with pleasant memories. If you do a little planning before you go, you will be better prepared to handle the emergencies that might arise. Just be sure to go with a friend, have first aid and survival supplies just in case they are needed, and comfortable, sturdy clothes and hiking boots. If you follow these few tips, you will have peace of mind knowing that you are prepared to enjoy your time in nature.
