Safety Precautions For Sport Fishing

Sport fishing is a thrilling experience, and it is a favorite pastime of many Americans

. Although sport fishing can be exciting, failing to follow certain safety tips can turn a grand adventure into a tragedy in the blink of an eye. Below are a few safety tips that can help ensure the safety of your sport fishing excursion:

Wear a life jacket at all times on a boat. Most sport fishing takes place on the open sea in deep water. The combination of a slippery deck, rocking boat, and diving and darting fish on the line can cause you to go overboard. Make sure that you are wearing a life vest that is properly fitted and clasped to prevent near-drowning and drowning accidents. A life jacket must be the right size; if it is too tight, it may hinder breathing, and if it is too loose, it may force your head underwater if you go overboard.

Remember to wear sunscreen and protective clothing, such as a hat or sun visor, to prevent painful sunburn. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you venture out into the sun, and then reapply every two to three hours thereafter. You can still get a sunburn in cloudy weather, so don't forget to apply sunscreen even if the sun is not shining.

Boat decks can become wet and slippery. It is important to wear appropriate footwear to prevent slip and fall injuries.

Drink plenty of water. On a hot day, you may at risk of suffering heat stroke if you are not properly hydrated. Make sure you take a sufficient amount of water for every person on the boat.

Keep knives and other sharp objects stowed safely away when not in use. Be careful when handling fish, as well, as there fins can be very sharp, causing painful cuts. Make sure you keep a first aid kit handy in case of emergencies.

No matter what your plans are, always stay informed about weather conditions. Keep a transistor radio with you on the boat and monitor weather forecasts routinely throughout the fishing trip. The weather can change in an instant, placing you in danger. Stay off the water if hazardous weather conditions, such as high winds, heavy rains or tropical storms are expected.

Following these simple safety tips can help ensure everyone remains safe on your next sport fishing trip.
