Safety Precautions For Undertaking Sandblasting

Sandblasting is the name given to a process that involves a stream of sand being

applied at high pressure to a surface using either water or compressed air. The process is commonly used for cleaning purposes, especially in terms of industrial and heavy machinery. It is also used to prepare a surface for enameling, painting and galvanizing, as well as for removing caked on grime and dirt from the surface of concrete buildings.

When completing sandblasting, it is important to keep in mind that you are working in a hazardous environment and that the proper safety precautions must be taken. Use the following tips to ensure that you are fully prepared for undertaking all sandblasting projects as safely as possible:

Never attempt sandblasting without being fitted with a standard air breathing apparatus. There are a number of toxic substances involved in the process, including zinc and lead, that can be potentially life threatening if inhaled. Because of this, you need to ensure that you have access to a steady supply of clean air.

Never take off your air breathing apparatus until you have moved well clear of the work area. This is because the harmful particles involved in the process are known to remain suspended in the air for a while after you have finished sandblasting. By making sure you are well clear of contaminants, you reduce your chances of inhaling them.

Always wear the proper safety gear whenever you are in the sandblasting work area, even if you are just passing through. This includes wearing gloves, safety goggles, boots and coveralls. Make sure that your safety gear has been approved for use with sandblasting, as not all types are able to withstand the pressure.

Select an appropriate area of the workplace for sandblasting to be undertaken. You need to make sure that there will be no danger posed to your workers or the public at large and that the chances of someone accidentally wandering through the space whilst work is in progress are very slim.

Only allow people who have been properly trained to operate sandblasting equipment. This includes reading the operators manual for the particular machine your company is using and having the correct operation demonstrated by a trained individual. Untrained people should not be granted access to the space.

Whilst sandblasting is a highly useful process that enables workers to clean their heavy machinery with relative ease, the machines involved and the process itself can pose a number of safety hazards to workers and those around them. This is why it is important to recognize the above safety precautions and to adhere to them at all times.
