Safety Tools For Power Tools
Power tools are one of the benefits of living in this modern age
. Without them we'd be reduced to nothing but hand tools and let's faces it; a hammer and chisel are not nearly as much fun as say a router. With great power tools comes great responsibility. I think I've used that line before, but it's still true.
Projects involving power tools at work or at home require the same amount of attention to safety in either location. Often power tool accidents at home go unreported or even unnoticed. There just aren't any real statistics to back up any sort of numbers related to at home use and accidents. But if you look at the number of professionals that are injured every year, I'm willing to be willing to bet the actual number of home users injured is comparable if not higher. Safety should be observed.
One of the most common misunderstandings about power tools is that they can do anything. If it cuts, it should cut into anything, if it drills; the same thing. This is not true. Make sure you have a blade or bit that is working on the material it was designed to work on. A common error is to use a wood bit on a metal surface. This results in a lot of bits breaking, thus metal flying through the air and landing in who know what (or who). The same applies to saw blades. Use the right blade and bit.
Wearing the proper clothing while working at home is not something most people do. It is important to wear the right clothing though. For example, a loose shirt cuff is just as apt to get caught in a saw at your house as it is to do the same thing at your shop at work.
Wear eye protection at all times, possibly even in the bathroom. Definitely in the bathroom if you are remodeling it. I know that safety glasses can be a real pain in the neck, but it's better than a pain in the eye. Eyeglasses are not a safe alternative to a real set of safety glasses. You should have side pieces for your prescription glasses if you are going to wear them in place of a safety pair. Things do fly in from the side, and dust can still get into your eye if you do not have most of the angles covered.
Keep your work area well ventilated. How does this have anything to do with power tools? Sawdust, metal dust and other types of dust can get into your lungs and make breathing harder. When refurbishing furniture, a lot of times old finish and pain can get into the air; can you say lead? Wear a dust mask at least, okay?
Maintaining your power tools in the way that the manufacturer recommends is the smart thing to do. Not only with this make sure your warrantee stays in effect, but will help extend the life of your power tools. Also there are yet more safety concerns associated with this as well. Tools breaking while you are using them is bad. Store your power tools in a manner the manner the manufacturer recommends as well.
Stay safe and keep your tools safe as well. Doing so will enhance your enjoyment in home projects and safety at work so you can afford to buy more stuff for home projects. Stay smart and pay attention to what you are doing. Good luck in all your projects.
