Safety in Australia following attacks on Indian students

There has been a lot of publicity across Asia following a series of attacks on Indian students studying in Melbourne in 2009. As a result of these attacks many students who were planning on studying in Australia decided not to. But even though the attacks were a sad event, their prevalence was highly exaggerated by the Indian media.

The attacks were portrayed as being racially motivated but in reality only a couple of them were, the others were ordinary crimes the like of which occur in any large city in the world. In fact, such muggings and assaults are relatively uncommon in Melbourne and Australia generally. Australia has some of the lowest rates of crime in the world and such crimes are, ironically, far more prevalent in large Indian cities.

It is impossible to guarantee safety anywhere, but prospective students should feel confident that they will be unharmed while studying in Australia. One way to ensure this is to avoid going places by oneself at night. Most of the aforementioned attacks occurred late at night and such attacks rarely happen in daylight hours.

Generally speaking, Australia is an incredibly safe country. While organised crime exists, it tends to be in the form of bikie gangs' group motorcycle-riding groups which act as fronts to drug dealing and other unpleasant activities. It is probable that someone living in Australia will never see a member of these gangs, and indeed would never be directly affected by their actions. News reports involving bikie gangs invariably involve clashes between bikie gangs and police, and between bikie gang factions. It is extremely rare for bikie gangs to interact with anyone who is a reasonable law-abiding citizen.

More dangerous than any of the above influences is the difference in road rules in Australia. International students often find it difficult to get used to cars driving on the left hand side of the road, and that one should look right, left, then right before crossing. This said, Australia has some of the strictest road rules in the world, and numbers of deaths and injuries due to road accidents are very low, especially in comparison to India and China, the countries from which most international students come from.

Although accidents do sometimes occur and although there are some instances of crime,the vast majority of students leave Australia never having been the victim of crime or even feeling unsafe.
