I have seen this technologyin the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I came to know that "Saheli" a weekly oral contraceptive pill was developed by Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi.
Generally woman has to take a pill daily for preventing pregnancy. It is really difficult task for them to remember daily to take this pill. I came to know that there is a pill called Saheli' which can be taken once in a week.
Saheli is the world's only 100% Steroid Free Oral Contraceptive Pill that has no steroidal side effects Like Weight Gain, Nausea, Giddiness or Mood Swings. It is the gentlest and the most independent way of avoiding unwanted pregnancies. One million people are already using this drug for the prevention of pregnancy.
Central drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow has developed the molecule called Centchroman' and later it was marketed by Hindustan Unilever Limited under the brand name Saheli.
It is an indigenously developed drug the first of its kind and weekly once pill for prevention of pregnancy. There are no side effects and the only side effects reported with Saheli the delay in the menstrual cycles in around 8% of the cases. Saheli has shown to be beneficial for treating dysfunctional uterine bleeding, osteoporosis and premenstrual syndrome and as a drug for lowering lipid levels in the blood.
Each tablet contains centchroman 30 mg. and the molecule centchroman offers a unique combination of weak estrogenic and potent anti estrogenic properties. Due to this subtle mix of estrogenic and anti estrogenic action it inhibits the fertilized ovum from nidation and thus prevents pregnancy. At the same time it will not disturb the other estrogen effects.
Initially this pill has to be taken twice a week on fixed days for the first three months and after that only one pill in a week.
Use of Saheli (Centchroman) has been extensively evaluated in more than 2000 women of the reproductive age groups. Intensive monitoring all trails like clinical examination, hematology and biochemical tests as well as laparoscopy and ultra sonographic examinations of ovaries and uterus have shown the drug to be quite safe.
This drug targets the age group of 20-45 years for prevention of pregnancy. Saheli priced low and it is available in 8 pills pack.
