Salary Negotiation – What to Do and What Not to Do
One of the inevitable actions one will take as an employee is salary negotiation
. To be honest, if you want to have a successful negotiation, it is best that you learn the basics of what to do and what not to do. There are a lot of people who fear the fact that they have to ask for more salary for the mere fact that it is just scary to do so. The fact is that if you believe that you deserve a better salary, then you should just go ahead and ask for it.
For starters, Do ask for the appropriate rate that you should be getting for a person with your experience and level. Remember that salary is usually based on the area that you work in so know these rates as well. Whatever happens, Don't ever compare what you get in your company with other people. This generally doesn't help the situation and leaves you lying envious of what others are making.
If you want to enter into salary negotiation, Do make sure that you are confident in the accomplishments that you have done for the company. It is best that you list down all of your past achievements so that you can present them to the person that you are going to negotiate with. Whatever happens, Don't take this for granted and demand for salary negotiation and have nothing to show; chances are you might be let down and be disappointed.
When talking about salary negotiation, do talk about the reasons why you are eligible for the raise. This is the reason why it is good to prepare before hand and list down the reasons why this should be granted to you. Don't talk about personal expenses and make it a reason why this salary should be granted to you. Technically speaking, personal expenses are not the concern of the company. Chances are if you use this an excuse you might not be granted the salary raise.
It is important that you and you company Do reach some sort of compromise. Remember that salary negotiation is a negotiation so expect that there will be offers and rejections along the way. Beforehand, it would be a good idea to make sure that the amount you ask for has an allowance just incase the company lowers the offer you are asking for. Don't feel too down if your offer is not what you expected it to be. Keep an open mind and weigh your options. Know that the company is a good one and remember that losing your job is even worse.
Remember to always keep in mind the basics of what you should do and shouldn't do when it comes to negotiating salary.
Salary negotiation should be important to you especially if you are confident in your work and achievements done for the company.
