"I talked to him for a long, long time," McCann said. "His spirits are unbelievable. He's just a strong human being. He's looking at it as a positive. He told me last night that he's doing a lot better."
When McCann returned to Champion Stadium to prepare for Thursday evening's game against the Nationals, he seemed to be a little more relaxed than he had been since playing an unfortunate role in the near-tragic event that caused Salazar to lose his eye and suffer multiple facial fractures.
During the first inning of a March 9 game against the Cardinals, the left-handed McCann lined a pitch into the first-base dugout, where it struck Salazar and led him to unconsciously fall before slamming his head against the dugout floor.
There was a sense of relief when Salazar lived and when doctors revealed he hadn't suffered any brain damage. But the hope for one more miraculous development was erased Tuesday, when surgeons were unable to prevent him from losing his eye.

McCann had visited Salazar a few hours after the incident. But Salazar was heavily sedated and unable to communicate like he has with many members of the Braves' organization over the past few days.
"Sitting down with him was awesome," McCann said. "His attitude is off the charts. He's looking at it as a positive with what could have happened. He's alive. That's the most important thing.
"I just wanted to see and talk to him. I didn't have any expectations. I came out of it knowing his spirits are up and he's going to be fine. He reassured me the whole time that he's going to be fine and he's going to be back at work in a couple of weeks."
Doctors have told Salazar that he could return to work on a full-time basis in four to six weeks. He joined the Braves' organization this year to serve as Class A Advanced Lynchburg's manager.
Simply knowing that Salazar will be able to continue helping young players is comforting to McCann and the many other players who feared for the worst last week when they looked in the dugout and saw him bleeding heavily as paramedics detected nothing more than "shallow" breathing.
"It's tough," McCann said. "It's an unfortunate accident, but at the same time, it's something you never want to go through -- seeing a guy lying there on the ground. Anything could have happened. You just feel very lucky that he's alive and there's no brain damage."

"When you play baseball, you better be focused or you're not going to succeed," McCann said. "Last night just reassured me that he's fine and that he's going to get past this. He's going to be in my thoughts and prayers every day. He's a great guy."
