Sales Jokes Appropriate In Training Presentations

Most of the training organisations surveyed (the remaining 65%) were negative about

the use of sales jokes in presentations in that they were concerned that by including jokes about sales they would lose credibility with their audience. In addition to a loss of credibility these training organisations also considered that jokes on sales would reflect poorly on their professionalism and jeopardise future referrals which they believed to be critical to grow their businesses.

The training organisations were also concerned that if they included humour as part of a presentation and misjudged the audience there was the risk that inappropriate say, adult sales jokes, would have a detrimental effect in that if any of the audience were offended, they could look to seek damages from the training company. In a time when political correctness is high on the responsibility list for all companies, it was simply not an option for the 65% to include sales jokes in presentations because the negatives in their view far outweighed any positives - of which they believed there were few.

The 35% of training organisations that did include humour in their presentations were adamant that without sales jokes being incorporated into a presentation the audience often disengaged and lost focus. In the view of these training organisations humour was critical if the audience was to not lose interest. Regardless of the quality of the sales techniques and skills imparted during a presentation, unless jokes about sales were included throughout there was little hope to keep the audience engaged.

In the view of these sales training organisations including a few good sales jokes was just as important for them as it was for a sales manager to include a sales meeting joke or a sales training joke in in-house sessions he may have with his sales team. Training organisations that included humour in their presentations were careful to ensure that presenters did not include any inappropriate adult sales jokes and the like because they recognised there was a risk in doing this.

The sales training organisations were surveyed over a 6 month period. Interestingly, the training organisations in the 65% that adopted a "no sales jokes" philosophy received limited repeat business from their employer clients and no referrals from participants involved in the actual sessions. When asked to rate the training sessions the 65% group rated lower than the 35% that included sales jokes and humour in their presentations.

This group also achieved a good level of repeat business form the employers and many more referrals from the participants in the training sessions. The survey clearly reflected that the inclusion of humour in a sales training presentation led to greater referrals and a much higher level of repeat business from clients.
