Saline or Silicone? It's Your Choice

Size, texture, shape and most importantly: silicone or saline

. When it comes to breast implants for your breast enlargement, it really comes down to saline or silicone. The choice was easy a few years ago, when saline was the only option available to the public. However, with the approval of silicone a couple of years ago, you now have more options than ever before (along with fat transfer, which is whole different topic!).

Both implants are made of a silicone shell, so when we say "saline" or "silicone", we're really referring to what's inside. So why do some physicians and women choose saline, while others are totally devoted to silicone?

The Feel

Silicone wins hands down here. The "gummy bear" feel of cohesive silicone gel implants mimic natural breast tissue better. They are more pliable and softer. Saline feels more like a bag of water, which is what it essentially is. If you want a better understanding of what we're talking about, just visit a cosmetic surgery clinic and ask to feel both (they should have samples that you can see). You'll notice the difference immediately.

Weight

A concern about larger implants is the weight they'll add to the body. Here, silicone wins again since it tends to be lighter than saline.

The Risk of Rupture

Implants aren't life time devices and the risk of rupture always exists because of their structure. If a saline implant ruptures, you'll notice deflation far earlier than if a silicone implant breaks, usually within about a week. It takes more than 2 weeks usually to notice anything wrong with silicone, because of its cohesive nature. Sometimes, MRI's are the only way to really tell if a silicone implant has ruptured. Faster detection allows you to fix the problem faster as well, which is considered a good thing, don't you think? So saline wins here.

In the end, you and your doctor are the only people that can decide which implant is best for you. Think about it before you decide!
