San Diego two-win streak adds pressure to Kansas City

San Diego two-win streak adds pressure to Kansas City

The Chiefs are undefeated this season at home, where they will play their last two games against the Tennessee Titans and division rivals Oakland Raiders, aware that they can rely on a mistake from the Chargers that are just one win away.

San Diego Chargers' win against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14 could have been useless for them if they didn't defeat the San Francisco 49ers one week later, which they did by 34-7. With the loss at San Diego the Chiefs have seen how their two win advantage has been reduced to one (9-5), which leaves them with no margin of error as long as San Diego (8-6) can keep their 2-win streak going until January 2, when the regular season is over.

The Chargers will have the handicap of playing both of those games on the road, first against the Cincinnati Bengals and then versus their division rivals the Denver Broncos. The good news for St. Louis is that none of their upcoming opponents are having a wining season, and as a fact both of them are far from it with a 3-11 record after 15 weeks.

Between Week 8 and 12 -went on Bye in 10- the Chargers achieved the same winning streak that they are in need of at this season ending: four wins in a row versus Tennessee Titans 33-25, at Houston Texans 29-23, against Denver Broncos 35-14 and at Indianapolis Colts 36-14. Oakland's visit to the Qualcomm Stadium put an end to their series of victories during Week 13, but it has shortly retaken one week later against the division leader Kansas City.

With his third consecutive 4000+ passing yards and +28 touchdowns season quarterback Philip Rivers is guiding St. Louis to their second winning season in a row. On Sunday's 34-7 win against San Francisco he threw 19 of 25 for 273 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also set a career high thanks to his 150.5 passer rating that night. If he can put those numbers together again at Cincinnati, the Chargers should struggle to take one more step towards their playoff goal.

The Chargers not only need to win the last two games, but also wish for a loss from the Chiefs either against the Titans in the Arrowhead Stadium or versus the Raiders at the same venue. Tennessee just put an end this weekend to their six-loss streak, thanks to their victory against the Texans by 31-17. If the boost from this win is effective, the Chargers wishes could be granted, and the scenario in the AFC West could take a new direction, as a new contender could get into the fight to clinch division: the Raiders (7-7).

But this scenario not only depends on a loss from Kansas City, as Oakland needs a win on Week 16 against Indianapolis and a defeat from St. Louis too to renew their chances of reaching the divisional round. If that is the case, Week 17 game between Chiefs and Raiders will have the same ingredients of a playoff round: whoever losses is out.

If these series of results are given and the AFC West ends with Chiefs, Raiders and Chargers tied with a 9-7 record, Oakland would be clinching division as they would have a better divisional record. The Chiefs can't relax and they know it, well see if they can stand the pressure.
