Vernon Davis caught a 13-yard pass for his third touchdown in two weeks
, Patrick Willis returned an interception 23 yards for a score and the San Francisco 49ers beat the St. Louis Rams 35-0. Get San Francisco 49ers tickets and see Davis catch a TD pass. San Francisco (3-1) took a commanding lead in the NFC West with their victory over the Rams. They already defeated reigning division champion Arizona and bested Seattle, as well.
Willis said "People are going to say it's only St. Louis." The linebacker continued to say that any time you can look on the scoreboard and see your opponent's goose egg, it's been a great day. The Rams (0-4) lost their 14th straight game, the longest current streak in the NFL. St. Louis was shut out for the second time this season, as the Rams lost to the Seahawks 28-0 in the season opener.
The 49ers scored touchdowns via special teams, offense, and defense for the first time since 1997. During halftime, San Francisco coach Mike Singletary told his team, "This is our house, we want to set the tempo." The coach added that he did not want another team coming in their house and setting the tempo. 49ers quarterback Shawn Hill hit Josh Morgan for a 24-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. Defensive end Ray McDonald scooped up a fumble by St. Louis quarterback Kyle Boller and ran 11 yards for another TD 14 seconds later. Rookie linebacker Scott McKillop recovered a botched punt returned by St. Louis in the end zone. Hill noted that every unit pitched in for the win. The quarterback stated that they are on top of the division, just where they wanted to be a quarter into the season.
McKillop was able to come up with the ball after St. Louis' Danny Amendola let Andy Lee's punt go and teammate Quincy Butler picked up the ball but couldn't hold on. The 49ers swarmed and McKillop emerged from the pile with the ball. Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo was disappointed with the team's lack of communication. The coach stated that you have to communicate to the guys that are blocking for you that the ball's on the ground. Boller went 13-of-24 for only 108 yards and was sacked five times. The backup quarterback filled in for injured starter Marc Bulger (bruised rotator cuff). Willis was all over the field, he finished with eight tackles (five solo, three for loss) and two and a half sacks with three other hits on Boller.
49ers running back Frank Gore was sidelined due to an injured ankle he suffered during a last-second loss at Minnesota in Week 3. Rookie running back Glen Coffee tried to step in for Gore, but the Rams held him to 74 yards on 24 carries. Hill went 14-of-24 for 152 yards and improved his career record at Candlestick Park to 7-0. After the game, a reporter asked Hill if he was concerned with all of the hits he has been taking. How did he feel? The quarterback responded by saying he felt like he played "in an NFL football game."
