It is set in very human, fictional immigration stories, about a mother named Swatanter, her daughter Devi and their small, extended family in and around Berkeley, Calif. The backdrop to the story is freedom, within the thorny subject of arranged marriages and a proposal for Devi, as well as in her parents own marriage. The novel unfolds simultaneously from a mothers and her daughters perspectives, using the Indian classical literary tradition of nested, interconnected stories.

We usually read about the problems of immigrant children, who are born in the U.S. or come to the U.S. at an early age, but not much about the immigrant parents. If we do read about them, it is not with much compassion, Roshni Rustomji-Kerns, Professor Emerita at Sonoma State University, said. The two Thanksgiving episodes are really moving, and the interweaving of the number of stories is wonderful.

Written with the Language Arts and the K-12 Frameworks in mind, this book augments Jhumpa Lahiris The Namesake in the K-12 Common Core Content Standards; it is also suitable for undergraduates. The authors previous title from 1992, a retelling of the Punchtuntra Fable for all ages, The Blue Jackal, is included in Prentice Halls Anthology of Literature for Middle Grades.
