Sanding Teak Floors

With beautiful, eye-catching, mellow-gold or brownish-red appearance, teak floors are popular not only because of a character, but also for their extreme hardness. This makes them less vulnerable to damage than many other hardwood floors and durable, with a long lifespan flooring. Although teak is not easily damaged, like any surface it occasionally will need restoration. The way teak floors arerestored willdepend on how it was damaged.

Surface Scratches

Rough up the scratched area with steel wool or a fine-grit sandpaper. Rub the entire scratched area in the direction of the grain of the wood.

Pour some mineral spirits on a cloth. Wipe the scratched area of your teak wood floor with the cloth to remove any dust and debris. Allow the mineral spirits to dry on the floor.

Dip a small paintbrush into the stain (or finish) you last used to finish your floor. Apply the stain to the scratched area. Wipe the stain with a cloth.

Allow the stain to dry for the recommended drying time on its label

Fill in any gouged or missing areas of wood with a wood filler that matches the tint in the color of your floor - colour mastic filler is prefered putty for floors which sealant is in a good condition. Smooth over the wood filler with a putty knife. Allow the wood filler to dry for the time listed on its instructions.

Sanding Teak Floors

There are some points, which makes floor sanding of teak floors different from other timbers.

Sand your teak floors with 24 or 40 grit sanding paper depending on the level, current sealant thickness and conditition of the floors, placed on a belt floor sander. Sand in the direction of the grain. Sand the entire floor in overlapping passes. If you are sanding teak parquet flooring in herringbone pattern, make sure you sand in diagonal strips following the strips of the pattern.

Once complete, sand the floors with 60 grit sanding paper and here you can use the collected from the sanding dust, to produce a putty with a clear resin filler.

Vacuum the floor to remove any debris and sawdust before continuing with the teak floor restoration.

Sand the entire floor again with 120 grit sanding paper on a belt sander and a hand sander. Continue with the floor sanding until the floors are smooth to the touch.

Sealing the floors - start with primer first if you are about to seal the floors with waterborne varnish. Follow 2 coats of waterborne varnish of your choice. Two or thress coats of solvent based varnish may be applied without application of a primer. However, do consult the application direction of your product.
