Saving Driving Costs - Survey

According to a recent survey carried out by AA Roadwatch

, Irish drivers have saved a huge amount on driving costs over the last year, significant price cuts in several areas have offset rising fuel costs to the extent that Irish motorists are currently able to save an average of four hundred Euros on driving costs in 2010, in comparison to 2009.

Certain motoring costs have indeed increased over the past decade, but contrary to popular perception, the cost of motoring has in fact reduced. Taking account of the full cost of running a car, the Irish are now better off.

Running costs for the average family car have reduced by a massive 4% from 2009 to 2010. The average cost for motorists running a Band C category car is around 11,000, a Band C car is a small family car with an engine size of 1251cc-1500cc.

The cost of fuel has certainly increased over the past year; the average increase is 17c or 15% per litre for unleaded petrol, for diesel the rise has not been as steep, but has still risen by an average of 10.5c or 9% over the past year. Nonetheless, the cost of other motoring costs have reduced, meaning that overall, and drivers save money.

Car insurance is one area in which drivers have been able to save money, there has been an average reduction in the cost of car insurance policies by up to 1.3% in comparison to last year's car insurance costs in Ireland. Those drivers who now receive the best deals on their car insurance are drivers over the age of 45, and women aged between 25-45.
